Who’s at risk?

Everyone is at risk of skin cancer, although some more than others. Skin cancer occurs when skin cells are damaged by over exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, exposure to toxic substances or by having a condition that weakens the immune system.

Every year in Australia:

  • Skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers
  • Between 95% and 99% of skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun
  • GPs have over 1 million patient consultations per year for skin cancer
  • The incidence of skin cancer is one of the highest in the world, two to three times the rates in Canada, the US and the UK

There are three main types of skin cancer:

Total body mapping

Almost everyone has moles and it can be difficult to know whether the appearance of a mole has changed or whether a mark on your skin is new. At Newcastle Skin Check, we offer total body mapping using the most advanced, German-manufactured scanning equipment. Computerised photographs are taken of the entire body and during routine annual checks, any changes to your skin are immediately detected by our computer system and are documented and analysed.

Post-melanoma diagnosis

If any skin abnormalities are identified, our highly qualified team will be able to offer expert advice on the best way to treat or remove the lesion or mole. Following any treatment, in particular post-melanoma diagnosis, we recommend routine monitoring to ensure your skin remains cancer-free.
